It is now modified for the stage having transferred to the West End after a impressive run at the Tricycle Theatre. John Buchan, the author of The Thirty Nine Steps, was a Scottish author born on 26th August, 1875. He is famed for his horror fiction, including the novel Witch Wood, The Wind in the Portico and The Green Wildebeest. He was at one time Governor General of Canada. In 1915, he released his most celebrated book The Thirty Nine Steps. It is a spy thriller set just prior to the outbreak of World War One. It features his hero Richard Hannay. It is supposed that Hannay was based on a friend from his days in South African, Edmund Ironside. The 39 Steps is the 1st of 5 novels featuring Richard Hannay. He is an action hero and a astonishing habit of getting himself out of embarrassing situations. The book inspired Alfred Hitchcock's classic film of the same name.
