Theatre
The Ambassadors Theatre is a modest theatre with an equally modest stage - the depth of the stage is merely 6.25 metres. This intimate auditorium has a proscenium arched stage which befits revue style productions. The Ambassadors and St Martin's next door were conceptualised as companions by their architect WGR Sprague in 1913 - although St Martin's was held up by three years. This theatre altered its name to The New Ambassadors Theatre in 1999. The Ambassadors is maybe best recognised as the original dwelling of the Agatha Christie thriller The Mousetrap which opened here on 25th November 1952 - and remained until 25th March 1974 when it transferred to St Martin's. Celebrated productions after this include 84 Charing Cross Road and a transfer of The Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Christopher Hamptons play Les Liasons Dangereuses . Additional recent productions have included resurgences of The Killing of Sister George (with Miriam Margolyes) and Dames at Sea (with Kim Criswell, Sara Crowe and Peter Duncan). The New Ambassadors Theatre was habituated by The Royal Court Theatre between 1996 and 1999 to stage their 'Theatre Upstairs' studio based work while their own theatre in Sloane Square underwent significant reconstruction. Since June 1999 the theatre has been used to deliver short seasons of fresh work and resurgences.
