Avenue Q at Gielgud Theatre London

Avenue Q is a musical that was formed by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who composed the music and lyrics. The show was in the first place produced at the Off-Broadway Vineyard Theatre in March 2003.

The flourishing production then transferred to Broadway in July 2003 and won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show is for the most part inspired by, and in the fashion of Sesame Street.

Most of the characters in the stage production are puppets (operated by players onstage, the stage set depicts various tenements on a run-down street in New York City. The live characters and puppet characters sing, and short animated video snips are presented in various parts of the theatre, as an ingredient of the story.

Also, various characters are recognizably parodies of Sesame Street characters. The characters in Avenue Q are in their twenties and thirties and face adult problems instead of those confronted by a regular Sesame Street audience. The characters use profanity, and most of the songs comprise adult themes. A recurring idea is the significant character's search for a "purpose." The stage show is basically for those that are in their teens or older.

AVENUE Q was the winner of the 2004 TONY AWARD® for BEST NEW MUSICAL, BEST BOOK OF A MUSICAL and BEST ORIGINAL SCORE!
