Billy Elliot The Musical is the tale of a motherless boy whose father wants him to take up boxing. Instead, the boy discovers a love for ballet that leads him from secret lessons to a place at the Royal Ballet School

Set in the North East, Billy Elliot The Musical is a funny, heart-warming and feel-good celebration of one young boy’s dream. The story is about the coming of age of a boy, who experiences a love for dance, and wishes to embark on a career that is initially against his father's wishes. Billy embarks on a journey through a world of picket lines, cultural stereotypes, family crises and a headstrong ballet teacher. The ballet school shares the local hall where the boxing club resides and Billy is drawn into a world where he can realise his dreams. Meanwhile, Billy's father and older brother, who are both on strike, struggle to put food on the table and finally explode when they discover Billy has been squandering his boxing money on less than manly pursuits. Billy's ballet teacher persuades him to accept free tuition in order for Billy to audition for the Ballet School, but when the audition comes Billy is tragically forced to miss it as a result of his brother's scuffle with the police. Distraught by his family's lack of understanding, Billy unleashes his feelings in a dance meant only for his friend Michael to see, he is seen by his father who is amazed by the power and animation of his son's talent, he solemnly agrees to ensure Billy finally makes it to London for the audition.

This original story of Billy Elliot captured the hearts of people around the world when the movie was released in October 2000. This poignant film broke box office records worldwide and was nominated for a raft of awards including 3 Golden Globes, 3 Oscars and 13 Bafta awards. The musical opened in March 2005 to extraordinary acclaim. Since then, the show has won a number of awards, including Best Musical at The Olivier Awards and Evening Standard Awards.
