The Blood Brothers Musical

Blood Brothers Musical

The Willy Russell classic Blood Brothers is a book as well as a stage musical. The original production was written as a school play and presented in 1981. Russell then developed it into a play, which opened, in the Liverpool Playhouse in 1983, starring Barbara Dickson and Andrew C Wadsworth. It was only a limited success. The show transferred to London where it performed for only six months before closing somewhat prematurely. Bill Kenwright then took over the show and following a very successful national tour it opened in the Albery Theatre (now The Noel Coward Theatre) in London in 1988 before transferring it to the Phoenix Theatre.

Twenty years it is still running. The play is set in the city of Liverpool and is about twins separated at birth but whose paths cross later in life. This very emotional story is about twin brothers Mickey and Eddie, who grow up in quite different social circumstances.

The story begins with a single mother in financial desperation who gives away one of her newly born twin sons and attempts to keep them from discovering one another's true identity. However, their lives become linked and her long held secret leads them to the possibility of a tragic ending.

Now commonly regarded as one of the all time great British musicals, Blood Brothers has touched the hearts and minds of a generation of theatre visitors in dealing with two of the most pressing social issues of our time - inequality and unemployment.

The recommended age for children is 12 and above. Children under the age of 4 will not be admitted to the theatre.
